The famous stepwell in Jodhpur, known as Toorji Ka Jhalra, is a legacy of the city’s architectural past and one of the city’s most impressive wells.
The Toorji ka Jhalra Bavdi was built in the 1740s and is a complicated design of stepwell, one of the few existing structures exhibiting Jodhpur’s traditional water management systems.
Maharaja Abhay Singh’s queen-wife designed this architectural marvel, symbolizing the region’s centuries-old history of royal ladies overseeing public waterworks.
The design and structure help viewers understand the lifestyles of previous generations who used it in its prime time, with the site serving as a local watering source for its time.

History of Toorji Ka Jhalra Bavdi
Toor Ji Ka Jhalra stepwell was created during Maharaja Abhay Singh Rathore’s reign. Between 1726 through 1779, he ruled Jodhpur.
During that period, female members of royal families, particularly queens, participated in and directed programs to build public waterworks. The project was led by the queen of Marwar, the wife of Maharaja Abhay Singh Rathore, and thus the Toor Ji ka Jhalra was built in the 1740s and was used by the residents for centuries.
