In the mid of 14th century, while finding the perfect place to construct his new fort Rao Jodha reached Mehrangarh hill. There was a meditating sage on the hilltop. Rao requested the sage to leave the place so he could begin the construction of a fort.

But the sage refused to do so. Rao and his people then forcefully made the sage leave the hill. As a result of their actions, the angry sage cursed the emperor and said that his kingdom would face water scarcity forever.

To nullify the curse, royal priests asked the king to pray to Goddess Chamunda Mata.
